Packaging Designs For Social Media – Is it Instagrammable?
Shiny is Out, Matte Finish is IN
It would be difficult not to notice the trend in designing with a matte rather than a shiny finish. This is most evident on flexible plastic materials commonly used for stand-up pouch packaging. Traditionally, the pouches were designed with a glossy surface because it enhances the graphics.
However, now in today’s social media world where more and more products are designed to be Instagramable, a matte finish is much easier to photograph as it eliminates the light reflection. Smart marketers have recognized this and are designing accordingly.
When you take a walk through the grocery store, notice the labels, bags, boxes, and bottles designed with a matte finish. We can expect this trend to continue and grow as brand owners add new products or redesign their existing packages.
According to the 2018 Sprout Social Index, 51% of consumers used Instagram regularly, and more than half of those people (30%) like or follow a brand. Expect to see more big, bold and clear designs with bright colours, ideal for professional quality photos.
